Letter from the editor

Red is the hardest color to get right.

It fades first, stains everything and never looks the same in two lights. That's exactly why Ruby Kincaid built a whole color house around it, in a 1920s print shop on Baltimore Avenue where the presses used to run red ink.

Our six colorists specialise in warm tones: copper that glows, cherry that stays, auburn that reads natural. We keep a printed swatch book of every formula, because a good red deserves an archive.

Ruby's auburn is the first red I've had that looks natural in daylight and dramatic at night.

Our story

Our back issues

The building on Baltimore printed posters for eighty years. When Ruby took the lease, the red ink stains were still on the floor. She kept them.
