This issue

A studio in the trees, a color philosophy to match.

Wren opened Fern & Foil above a Victorian bookshop in 2016, after a decade coloring hair in Austin. She wanted slower days, fewer chemicals and windows full of oak leaves — and she wanted color that looked like it belonged outdoors.

Our balayage is painted to grow out like nature does: gradually, unevenly in the best way, with soft roots that never shout. We use ammonia-free and low-tox lighteners wherever possible, cut curls dry and send every guest home with a plan, not a product haul.

My balayage grew out so softly I went five months without noticing. It looks like I spent the summer outside, which, honestly, I did.

Color should grow out the way the woods grow in: slowly, softly, unevenly in the best way, until you forget you ever had a root line.
